J L Petit: The Lost Treasures of Lichfield

An exhibition celebrating the work of forgotten master and Pre-Impressionist J L Petit

This exhibition explores the breadth and range of John Louis Petit (1801-1868), an artist described by art critic and broadcaster Andrew Graham-Dixon as reaching 'the highest peaks of innovation and virtuosity, worthy of comparison with that even of Turner'.

For 120 years, Petit's extensive portfolio, which included up to 15,000 watercolours and pen drawings, was lost or forgotten, until it was uncovered in the 1980's following the sale of a family member's home.

This exhibition of prints shows Petit as a truly unique artist whose extensive travels saw him paint as far as Egypt and Turkey, but whose most-loved subjects were on his own doorstep.
