The Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz
Anne Sebba

Historian Anne Sebba presents the extraordinary story of the Women’s Orchestra of Auschwitz, revealing how music became a fragile act of defiance amid atrocity. Formed in 1943, this unique all‑female ensemble played marches for labour details and concerts for Nazi officers, a role that saved members’ lives while forcing profound moral compromise. Drawing on meticulous research and first‑hand accounts—from conductor Alma Rosé to cellist Anita Lasker‑Wallfisch—Sebba explores survival, propaganda, and female solidarity within a death camp. An acclaimed biographer and former Reuters correspondent, she brings sharp insight to this haunting story of art under coercion.
